Today i just want to show case 2 organizations and a music group pushing the boundaries in marketing and technology
Yesterday I had a great time at
the cinemas, I was invited to a private screening of the movie “The Internship” by the
Google Nigeria team and it was fun all the way. The movie itself was quirky,
inspirational and all that jazz. It also had a good mix of tech industry guys, media practitioners and i guess associates of the Google team
With stellar performances by
Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson and a “waka pass” cameo by Sergey Brin (Google
Co-founder), “The Internship” is a major marketing coup for Google as a
recruitment tool. All the product placements and plug-ins were done with class,
you didn’t feel like you were being sold an overt philosophy: at least I didn’t.
Go watch the movie…nuff said!
On my drive back home I tuned in
to The Beat 99.9 FM, an urban radio station I have come to love. An On Air
Personality (OAP) called Douglas was hosting an interesting google hangout.
This particular hangout was indeed a special one. They had an Irish music group
called Jedward (consisting of John and Edward, identical twins) on the hang out and their fans from across the
world were “circled in” to interact with them.
Here is the video recording of the hangout...

It was pretty amazing to me: here
was a radio station in Nigeria, hosting a google hangout for an Irish boy band
in Ireland with fans plugged in from
Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
Its amazing how technology has
flattened the world and extended the reach of people and organizations big and
small. Apparently some Jedward fans tweeted at Douglas to set up the hang out. These
fans were listening to the Traffic show which Douglas hosts on Beat FM online
in their countries. Douglas reached out to Jedward also via twitter, they
agreed to the hangout and that was it.
Jedward have now become known to
a whole new Nigerian audience, Beat FM became a facilitator of a trans-national
discussion and Google provided the technology to connect total strangers on a
wet Thursday evening across the globe.
In an extremely converged world,
the opportunity to open your skills, talents , services and brand to new
people, new markets and territories becomes something you neglect to your own
peril.
Its also good to note that many Nigerian artistes have also used Google Hangouts to connect with their global fan base in recent times.

Way to go Beat FM, Google and of
course Jedward.
